Interesting History

Altrusa of Laconia has been involved with the Laconia Girls Athletic Awards since 1966. Adrienne Stevens, Past District One Governor, brought it to the Club's attention that while there were several banquets honoring boys' athletic achievements, there were none for girls'.

Our Club then got to work and held the first girls' sport's banquet at the Christmas Island Convention Center on May 27, 1970. About 150 girls, parents, school officials, and Altrusans attended the first banquet.

This May we will be holding our 29th awards dinner. The award recipients come all dressed up for this event, and we have heard it said that they look forward to this dinner almost as much as their Prom night. The club pays for the atheletes' and coaches' meals and for the trophies. To help defray the costs associated with the Banquet, members of the Club obtain "signature ads" from the community for placement in the program booklet for a donation of $10.00 per line.

Thank you Adrienne for helping our Club become involved in such an important community service!
